Sampdoria makes concrete offer to Yari Verschaeren

Midfielder Yari Verschaeren, 24, is approaching the end of his contract with Belgian giants Anderlecht and has received a concrete offer from Serie A side Sampdoria, where Danish director sportif Jesper Fredberg is overseeing the project. Verschaeren logged 262 appearances, 33 goals and 44 assists for Anderlecht.

Verschaeren has earned seven caps for the Belgian national team, the Diables rouges, with his most recent appearance coming in March 2022. His international experience adds to his profile despite a series of injuries that have marked his career.

While Turkish club Trabzonspor showed interest in the past, the current focus has shifted to Italy. Sampdoria is the latest club reported to be pursuing the midfielder.

Sampdoria concluded the 2023-24 Serie A campaign in 13th place, far from the league’s elite. The club also famously denied Anderlecht the Cup Winners' Cup in 1990, a historical footnote linking the two sides.

The Italian side’s recruitment is being directed by Danish director sportif Jesper Fredberg. Fredberg, who previously worked at Sporting CP, aims to assemble a squad capable of quickly returning to the top of the table.

Fredberg has already persuaded Anderlecht's communication director Mathias Declercq to join him at Gêne on a one-year contract. Declercq's move underscores the growing appeal of Sampdoria's project.

According to DH, Verschaeren has received a concrete proposal from Sampdoria but has chosen to await additional offers before committing. The midfielder has not publicly commented on any specific terms.

With his Anderlecht contract set to expire, Verschaeren's next destination will be decided in the coming weeks. Any further offers will be evaluated against the concrete Sampdoria proposal.
