Oranje rally behind Cody Gakpo ahead of Morocco clash

🇳🇱
Cody Gakpo is set to start for the Netherlands in their World Cup knockout match against Morocco after the team gave him full emotional support following the loss of his unborn son, coach Ronald Koeman said on Sunday evening in Monterrey. Koeman said the squad did everything possible to support Gakpo, granting him freedom to leave the hotel and be with his family, and praised his maturity in handling the tragedy. He added that the players created an environment that allowed Gakpo to focus on football. Gakpo chose to remain with the group, and Koeman believes his personal situation will not affect his performance on the pitch. The coach affirmed that Gakpo has indicated he is ready to play. Captain Virgil van Dijk said being there for Gakpo is the most important thing, and he knows Gakpo is eager to help the Netherlands reach the next round. Van Dijk stressed that the whole squad has focused its attention on the upcoming knockout. Koeman recalled a similar tragedy in 2008 when defender Khalid Boulahrouz lost his newborn daughter, and Boulahrouz also stayed with the squad for the Euro quarter‑final against Russia. The players wore mourning bands in that match, a detail Koeman noted was not being repeated now. Koeman said he consulted former striker Ruud van Nistelrooij, who was present in 2008, and they consider the current support appropriate for Gakpo. Both agree that the approach matches past experience. The Netherlands' first knockout match against Morocco is scheduled for Monday night, kicking off at 03:00 Dutch time, with the team based in Monterrey. The squad will focus on the upcoming game, aiming to advance to the next round of the World Cup. They will rely on the collective spirit demonstrated in the camp, hoping it translates into success on the field.
