Bates swaps Belgium for Turkey under familiar coach Hasi

Scottish centre‑back David Bates has terminated his two‑year spell at Standard Liège to join newly promoted Turkish Süper Lig side Amedspor, coached by Besnik Hasi, with the move confirmed on Friday via the club’s social‑media announcement and later ratified by Standard Liège that evening.

Before his move, Bates built a career at Aberdeen, Hamburg and Glasgow Rangers. The Scottish defender brings that experience to Amedspor.

Amedspor is led by Besnik Hasi, who previously coached Bates at FC Malines during the 2023‑24 season. Hasi deployed Bates 24 times and the defender scored once in that campaign.

Bates’ tenure at Standard Liège was marred by injuries that kept him out for roughly eighteen months. After starting his first eleven matches, a knee problem sidelined him for the remainder of that season.

He returned to the lineup in January, featuring in the final six fixtures of the regular phase. His form continued into the European playoffs, where he started nine games and added another goal.

With one year remaining on his contract and approaching his thirties, Standard Liège chose not to renew his deal. The club confirmed his departure later on the same evening as Amedspor’s announcement.

Amedspor secured promotion to the Turkish Süper Lig prior to signing Bates. The club announced the transfer in a video posted to its social‑media channels on Friday.

Bates marked his exit with a farewell tweet that read “All the best, David.” The message was accompanied by a photo of the player.
