Apologies after the chaotic scenes

Shortly after the final, the celebration of the Spanish world champions was eclipsed by unrest on the pitch. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala also came under fire after a confrontation with Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo.

Ayala has now publicly offered his apologies. He admitted he was carried away by the emotions of the moment and said he wants to apologise to Olmo personally. The former defender said he never intended to let the situation flare further, although he acknowledged his behaviour was inappropriate.

While the Argentine FA prepares for the outcome of the FIFA inquiry, a completely different battle rages among fans.

A Change.org petition has been launched calling on FIFA to replay the World Cup final. The initiators question several refereeing decisions during the match and demand a full review of the final. Recent reports say the petition has already gathered more than 61,000 signatures and the number keeps rising.

Although the campaign is getting a lot of social‑media attention, the likelihood of the final actually being replayed is extremely low. Petitions on platforms like Change.org have no legal or sporting weight on official FIFA decisions. A World Cup final can only be replayed in exceptional circumstances when there is a clear regulatory basis, and that is not the case now.

Emotions clash with reality

The events show how deep the disappointment runs in a country where football is far more than a sport. For many Argentines the defeat hit hard, especially as the national team was close to defending the title successfully.

Yet FIFA’s focus seems to be on behaviour after the final whistle rather than on the match itself. The ongoing disciplinary inquiry will decide whether players or staff receive sanctions, but there are currently no signs that the result of the final is being questioned.

What began as a historic World Cup final has turned into a story that will echo for a long time, not only because of the new champions but also because of the emotional fallout that continues to divide the football world.
