Health concerns force Curaçao FA chairman Gilbert Martina to resign

Gilbert Martina has resigned as chairman of the Curaçao Football Association with immediate effect, citing health reasons. The decision follows a recent prostate cancer diagnosis that prompted him to step away from his duties.

Martina was diagnosed with prostate cancer only weeks ago. He chose not to disclose the illness earlier because of the large responsibilities tied to Curaçao's preparation for and participation in the WK, the historic first World Cup appearance.

In the run‑up to the WK, former coach Fred Rutten withdrew as national team manager. The players' group and sponsor Corendon advocated for the return of Dick Advocaat, a move that sparked controversy.

"It was a privilege to hold this position. My health now comes first and I must focus fully on my recovery," Martina said in the statement.

The association has not yet named a successor to Martina's role. The vacancy remains open as the federation prepares for the upcoming World Cup.

Dick Advocaat has not ruled out extending his tenure as national coach. "I do not say no in advance," he told Curacao.nu in a Wednesday interview.
