Houston Canetti hails million‑fan surge and Ronaldo’s draw

The Houston 2026 World Cup proved the city’s status as a premier international sports destination, securing over one million fans and showcasing Cristiano Ronaldo’s draw, a milestone for the Host Committee and U.S. soccer.

In the interview with World Soccer Talk, Chris Canetti, president of the Houston 2026 World Cup Host Committee, said more than one million fans attended events, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s two Portugal matches at NRG Stadium drew massive crowds, underscoring Houston’s standing in the World Cup.

Canetti described the opening of the Fan Festival on 11 June as the first busy day, noting the fan‑focused Fest set the tone for the tournament’s celebrations.

He recalled the inaugural match on 14 June between Germany and Curacao and highlighted the final Houston fixture on 4 July, a Round of 16 clash between Canada and Morocco, noting the city hosted matches for 21 days and that the Fan Fest continued for two weeks after the last game.

Seven fixtures at NRG Stadium each reached full capacity, delivering a cumulative attendance of 480,186 spectators, with official match‑by‑match figures around 68,000, meeting the committee’s expectations for sell‑out crowds.

Eighty‑one percent of ticket holders traveled from outside the greater Houston area, while citywide activations generated over 1,086,499 participants across official events, exceeding the committee’s original estimates.

Coordinating the influx of 500,000 visitors required extensive inter‑agency effort at airports, which Canetti described as “flawless operationally,” reflecting the smooth logistics behind the Cup’s success.

Looking ahead, Canetti mentioned his upcoming career transition and the lasting legacy the tournament will leave for domestic soccer in the United States, though he did not specify his next steps.
