Hugo Cuypers leaves Chicago Fire for Monterrey as Lewandowski arrives

On a humid evening at Soldier Field, the former Union SG and KAA Gent striker Hugo Cuypers watched the Chicago skyline fade as his contract with the Fire drew to a close. The Belgian forward, who had been a prolific scorer in the MLS, confirmed he will join Mexican side Monterrey after the league resumes.

Cuypers finished the MLS season with 13 goals in 11 competitive matches, a tally that kept him among the league’s top scorers and left him just one goal shy of Lionel Messi’s total. Despite the World Cup (WK) interrupting his rhythm, the Belgian striker remained the MLS’s leading marksman.

Chicago Fire seized the opportunity to sign Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer after his contract with FC Barcelona expired. The Polish forward immediately inherited Cuypers’ number nine shirt, prompting the club to reshuffle its attacking hierarchy.

Reflecting on the change, Cuypers said, "Robert is one of the best number 9s of all time and it would have been strange for him to wear a different number. So it was an easy decision for me. I hope we can achieve great things together on the field." The quote underscored his respect for the new teammate.

According to The Athletic, Chicago Fire reached an agreement with Monterrey for Cuypers’ transfer worth €6.55 million, plus approximately €400 000 in bonuses. The deal marks a significant financial outlay for the Mexican club.

Several MLS clubs, including St. Louis, expressed interest in the forward, but Cuypers opted for a new challenge in Mexico. Monterrey, where former Genk left‑back Gerardo Arteaga now plays, had just begun its season.

Lewandowski is set to make his Chicago debut on Thursday against Inter Miami, a match that will not feature Lionel Messi due to his participation in the World Cup final. The clash highlights the shifting dynamics in the league.
