Unfounded claims spark Argentine backlash after World Cup final

Argentinian midfielder Rodrigo de Paul said today that unfounded conspiracy theories have surrounded Argentina’s loss in the World Cup final, describing the backlash as a painful but unmerited reaction after the team’s defeat. He posted a lengthy message on social media, urging fans to remember the bond beyond a trophy.

A large part of the Argentine squad returned to Argentina on Monday, but De Paul and Lionel Messi were absent, remaining in America where they play for Inter Miami FC. Their continued stay in the United States was noted as they missed the homecoming.

Thousands of people gathered in Buenos Aires hoping to catch a glimpse of the Argentine selection, only to see that several players, including De Paul and Messi, did not travel back. The disappointment among the crowd was evident as the two stars stayed abroad.

De Paul wrote, "If anyone deserved to feel the joy of four years ago again, it was you. As the hours pass I realise the bond you have with this group goes far beyond a trophy. I hold onto that thought to get through this difficult period." He added, "Today I see how many people were waiting for this defeat. Throughout the World Cup they spread unfounded conspiracy theories to soothe their disappointment, because they could not experience what we Argentinians did. Our smile annoys them, but it also proves that passion and love for our shirt can overcome everything."
