Brighton's £20m strike for Struijk underlines smart rebuild

🇬🇧

£52m was the fee Tottenham Hotspur paid for Jan Paul van Hecke, leaving Brighton & Hove Albion with a sizable gap in defence. Brighton have now verbally agreed a £20m deal with Leeds United for defender Pascal Struijk. The move aims to restore stability after the summer exit.

Struijk leaves Leeds after eight and a half years, 196 appearances and involvement in Championship title wins in 2019-20 and 2024-25. His contract runs until June 2027, meaning Leeds faced risk of losing him for free in 12 months.

Brighton’s recruitment under manager Fabian Hurzeler has already turned the £52m Van Hecke fee into buying room. The £20m Struijk deal, at less than half that amount, offers a left‑footed defender with Premier League experience. Hurzeler has also been tracking Luka Vuskovic, who is currently at the World Cup with Croatia.

Leeds must replace the reliability Struijk provided, as his value lay in continuity as well as on‑ball ability. Clubs newly promoted to the Premier League need that stability to compete.

Brighton’s model of selling high and reinvesting wisely aims to strengthen the squad without overspending. The Struijk signing illustrates how the club converts a major departure into a broader squad upgrade.
