Antwerp lose former Spurs striker as he eyes MLS move to Portland

Vincent Janssen, the 32‑year‑old former Spurs striker, is leaving Antwerp to chase a fresh challenge in the United States, having agreed a deal with the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer. The move follows his departure from the Belgian side after four seasons and 64 goals in 173 appearances.

HNB reported that Vincent Janssen will sign for the Portland Timbers, confirming his move to Major League Soccer. He turned down interest from clubs in Japan, Türkiye and the Middle East, preferring the American league.

Antwerp were unable to reach an agreement with the former Spurs striker, ending a four‑season spell in which he became a key player. Janssen left the Belgian side after tallying 64 goals in 173 appearances.

He has been linked with an MLS transfer for some time, and several sources have noted his desire to play in North America. The ambition aligns with his decision to pursue a fresh challenge in the United States.

Janssen broke out at AZ Alkmaar, scoring an impressive 31 goals in 49 games during the 2015/2016 season. That prolific form earned him a move to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur. At Spurs he managed six goals in 42 matches.

A loan to Fenerbahçe in the 2017/2018 season followed before he left the club in the summer of 2019. He then spent four seasons with Monterrey in Mexico, finding the net 24 times in 93 games.

In the summer of 2022 he joined Antwerp, scoring 21 goals in his first season as the club secured a domestic double. He maintained double‑figure tallies in each of his four seasons with the Belgian side, cementing his status as a key player.
