Gotham FC's title hopes wobble after Sonnett injury
Emily Sonnett suffered a non‑contact rupture of the patellar tendon in her left knee in the seventh minute of Friday’s 2‑2 draw between Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns at Providence Park, forcing the USWNT defender onto a stretcher and ending her season.
“Emily has the full support of everyone at the club, and we will be with her every step of the way throughout her recovery,” said team president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West. “She is incredibly resilient, and we know she will return stronger.”
Since joining Gotham FC in 2024, Sonnett has made 64 appearances. She helped the club win the NWSL Championship and the Concacaf W Champions Cup last season and the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup. The defender is the only player in league history to win titles with three different teams.
The three‑time All‑NWSL defender has earned 118 caps for the United States women’s national team since her 2015 debut, featuring in two Women’s World Cups and two Olympic tournaments. Her international experience underscores her importance to both club and country.
Gotham FC has not announced a definitive recovery period, but the club remains two points behind the Washington Spirit in second place with a 10‑3‑4 record after 17 matches. The injury therefore hampers Gotham’s push for a top‑two finish.
The 2027 Women’s World Cup kicks off next June in Brazil, and Sonnett will focus on rehabilitation as the team navigates the remainder of the season. Gotham will need to adapt without her defensive leadership.
