Infantino's FIFA future in doubt as Norway demands his resignation

At a meeting on Thursday 6 August, the Norwegian Football Federation made its stance clear: no confidence in Gianni Infantino remains. The federation’s president, Lise Klaveness, announced the decision after the session, calling for the FIFA president’s immediate resignation. 'We have decided there is no trust in Infantino now,' Klaveness said. 'Each year, each part of the year, there has been one step further in a worrying direction. The trust has now gone for us. There is no way back for Infantino. We will therefore ask him to resign immediately so the global football community can look ahead and cooperate in the future.'

The move by the Norwegian federation is the latest escalation in a growing revolt against Infantino. Already under intense scrutiny following the 2026 World Cup for controversial decisions and tournament management, the FIFA president now faces a wave of opposition over his plan to create a commercial arm with private investors to maximize competition revenues. The initiative has drawn sharp criticism across world football.

Several member federations have already declared they will not support Infantino in the March 2027 presidential election. UEFA has gone further, threatening to boycott FIFA-organized competitions in response to the commercial branch proposal. The Norwegian federation’s public call for resignation marks the most direct challenge yet to Infantino’s leadership.

Klaveness emphasized the federation’s decision was not taken lightly but reflected a loss of confidence that cannot be restored. 'We have been consistently concerned,' she said. 'The situation has reached a point where cooperation is no longer possible under his leadership.'

The Norwegian federation’s stance adds weight to a broader movement already involving multiple federations and UEFA. While the Norwegian body alone lacks the voting power to force Infantino out, its public stance strengthens the coalition opposing his re-election bid and intensifies pressure on the FIFA president to reconsider his commercial strategy and leadership approach.
